The Trailblazer
Tomahawk Elementary - September 2026
Principal Message
It's hard to believe we are already heading into our second month of the school year. It has been a great start to the year, and we have loved seeing all of our new and returning students at school every day. Students have been busy learning about routines, procedures, and expectations in the classroom and throughout the school. It is so important to us that students feel safe and welcome at Tomahawk, every piece truly matters at here! Students have also been diving into all of their grade level and specials curriculum. There are so many fun and exciting things going on in the classroom, parents make sure you have connected your SeeSaw account so you don't miss any of the fun!
Thank you for all the parent volunteers and support this last month. Sneak-a-peek, Watermelon Feed, and Back to School Night all had a great turn out, and we could not do it without your involvement!
As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns! It's going to be a wonderful year!

We announce those to students at the end of the day and put the info on facebook also. So if your kiddo comes home and says tomorrow is an all school PJ day, check the website calendar or facebook to verify. Classroom/Grade level special days will be communicated by the teacher in Seesaw app.
Office Information
Reminder: Photo ID REQUIRED EACH TIME You Want to Enter Tomahawk
Please remember that District policy requires us to ask for ID from EVERYONE each time they enter the building. Please remember to have your driver's license or other form of picture ID ready for the camera at the door when you arrive at Tomahawk. If you come to the door without your ID, we will kindly ask you to return to your car to get it.
Safety Reminders for the Start of School
The school year has begun and with that comes more students walking to school and more car traffic on school campuses across the district. It’s important for all of us who drive near our schools to be especially careful of students walking. Those transporting students to/from school are asked to follow the recommended drop off/pick up procedures to ensure pedestrian safety and traffic flow. Parents should be sure to buckle their children and use child safety seats when necessary, even if the trip is short. It’s also a good idea to remind your child about ways they can have a safe walk to school.
· Look for cars when crossing the street
· Use crosswalks when available
· Cross with a crossing guard whenever possible
· Don’t text while walking (or while driving)
· Walk in groups and be aware of your surroundings.
· Be sure to follow the rules of the road if biking to school.
Dismissal Time
We want to thank everyone for their patience and flexibility at dismissal time. The first couple of weeks are the “retraining” time for our returning families and the “learning” time for our new Tomahawk families. Many of our families are catching on to the idea of coming to Tomahawk between 3:55-4:05pm and moving in line for about 10 minutes. Here are a few tips to make dismissal time move faster:
· Have your dismissal card # prominently displayed in your car window.
· Practice your dismissal # with your children and remind them that siblings should sit together in the gym.
· If the regular pickup routine might change due to weather or other circumstances, discuss with your child before school if he/she will be a car rider/ walker/bus rider on the way home. If you need to change your child’s way of getting home and contact your child during the school day, please call the office by 3pm. This will give us ample time to notify your student & teacher.
· Approach from the North side of Brougham to get into line. Coming from the South means you have to cut in line and hold up traffic behind you.
· Stay to the right lane for pick-up and drop off. The left lane is for buses and those who want to park in a parking spot.
· Follow signs and directions of dismissal staff.
We appreciate all your efforts to keep all Tomahawk students safe and to make this a Careful and Rapid Dismissal System!

Each month there will be a classroom recipient (K-5) chosen by the classroom teacher as someone who displays the expected behaviors of Tomahawk Students showing: We Matter, We are Safe, and We are Prepared. This student helps ensure others know that they: Belong, Matter, and are Loved.
The staff members who work with students outside of the classroom (Art, PE. Music, Computer, Library, Counselors, Lunch room staff) will vote on the representative for each classroom. That student will receive a yard sign for the month. We are so Proud of all of our Tomahawk students, and showcase their strengths in many ways through out each grade level and each class. We are excited to celebrate these school wide recipients each month, to continue to show our Tomahawk Expectations!

Counselor's Corner
Hi there!
I loved getting to be at school in August to help kick off a new school year, but I’m also looking forward to spending a little more time at home with our new baby boy! I’ll be staying home with him throughout September and part of October. While I’m away, Katie Cox will be joining us as my long-term substitute. I know you’ll all give her a warm welcome! I’m looking forward to seeing everyone again in October and hearing all about the wonderful things happening at school!
— Mrs. Gorczyca
My name is Katie Cox. I've been doing long term counselor substitutions for a couple of years now for the OSD & Spring Hill district. A little background - I received my undergrad from Ole Miss in fashion merchandising. I decided to go back to school and get my teaching license and taught high school in Mississippi for 3.5 years. When I got married in 2012, I moved to Kansas & received my master’s degree in 2018 in School Counseling then taught in the Grandview school district for 2 years before COVID. My husband, Wade, and I are both from Mississippi (may notice a little accent) ;) and we have 2 boys, Griffin (7th grade) and Gage (2nd grade) and our crazy Bernedoodle, Swayze. I love spending time with family, Ole Miss football and any/all sports my boys play! I look forward to meeting y'all... Thanks for this opportunity.

Hearing and Vision Screenings
Early Childhood, Jumpstart, grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 5, and students who are new to Olathe will get hearing and vision screenings this year. The school-wide hearing screening day will be Monday, October 5th. Vision screenings will be completed throughout the year as time allows. Parents will be informed if their student did not pass the screenings. Please let Nurse Devin know if you have questions about screenings.
Health Room Deadlines
- Immunizations: The Olathe Public School District policy states that immunizations must be current and up to date prior to our exclusion deadline which is October 12th, 2024. This includes boosters that are due! Please do this to avoid having your student excluded from school. Please turn these into Nurse Devin when completed. Reach out to Nurse Devin at dmandozzi@olatheschools.org with any questions.
- Physical / Health Assessment: If you are new to the school, have a student in Early Childhood, Jumpstart, or Kindergarten and have not turned in a health assessment from a healthcare provider to Nurse Devin, they are also due. These need to be completed and turned in prior to Thanksgiving Break. You have been emailed a reminder if your student is missing this.
- Medications and Orders: I cannot provide your student their medications at school without an order from a doctor. Please provide that via email, fax, or paper copy. You can send medication/inhalers/ Epi Pens to school with your student if you are comfortable, or you can stop by and bring it in. Thank you!

Art
If you have a 4th or 5th grader who is VERY into art and is able to independently come up with their own project ideas Art Club may be just right for them. Art club begins in late October and is one hour long after school on Mondays. We will have two sessions because spots can fill up fast! The second session begins in January.
Students must be self-starters. Our club is meant to foster students' individuality and self-expression. Students will be responsible for bringing home a paper sign up sheet for parents to sign. Placement in Art Club will be first come first serve. Permission slips will be available mid September.
Library
September is "Read a New Book" month! It is the perfect time to discover a new favorite! Encourage your child to step outside their usual reading choices and try a new book, author, series, or genre. Whether it's a funny picture book, an exciting adventure, or a nonfiction book about something they love, there's always something new to explore in the library. Who know? Your next favorite book might be waiting for you!
Music
Special Chorus at Tomahawk will start for 4th and 5th grade on Monday, September 14th! Students can get a form from Mr. Feagan, or they can sign up at https://forms.gle/eoLJvMCTKEkxJpB38

Health After School Habits
We often hear from parents that their child does great at school all day, but the minute they get home, the big emotions and behaviors come out. This is actually pretty common! The classroom can be a busy and overstimulating place, and kids spend a lot of energy all day listening, following directions, learning, and managing their emotions. When they finally get home to their safe space, they may let out all that pent-up energy and emotion from the day.
Try giving your child a little time to decompress when they get home. A snack, some water, outdoor play, quiet time, or simply not asking too many questions right away can go a long way. Don’t be surprised if your child needs that release after holding it together all day. Sometimes a little downtime is exactly what they need before jumping into homework and the evening routine.
A good after-school routine can make evenings a little easier—and help kids head into the next school day rested and ready to go.
Stay healthy and enjoy the start of fall,

From September 14th to September 18th, STUCO will be collecting fun bandages! Each student that brings a box of bandages (or donation of $2 or more) will get to ring the Tiger STUCO bell in the front hall for everyone to hear, when they drop their bandages in the collection box! Students who place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd compete the following week at the District Competitions, which are held at Olathe North. Participation in competitions is optional and also based on the number of students we have enrolled in the club.
If your child wishes to join Math Wings, or just try it out, they will need to fill out a permission slip. Their classroom teachers will have forms. Students may turn in their permission slips to their teacher or to Mrs. Hermanson. The first meeting will be September 8th in Mrs. Hermanson's classroom right after school.
